World of Warcraft Cataclysm Talking by Greg Street
Greg Street, as one of the World of Warcraft designers has some very interesting posts written about this year appearing extension WoW: Cataclysm in last weekend. First one talks about the ghost crab cleaning debuffs from friendly players in the second post about the general status of point distribution on the new objects.
Overall the philosophy is that a dispel should be a counter. That means, to us, that you should have to consider when it makes sense to use. Dispels shouldn’t be a test of how quickly you can mash that key when you see the icon pop up. Dispelling at the wrong time should cost you. We also don’t want to see such extremely different outcomes depending on the class of dispeller you have with you.
Firstly, the choice dispellen to be an important one. In a later posting Ghostcrawler says that they will not demonstrate the abilities with cooldowns, so we assume that the charm – despite the lack of debuffs – is still acted otherwise than at present. Thus the operation would cost at least a global cooldown and some mana.
As one wants to get at the reaction to the game or class differences, we will likely see only during the beta phase, because at present three different models exist to remove debuffs. Some of these on a model that should be exciting.
In the second paper Ghostcrawler talks about the items in Cataclysm. At present, the problem is that the diversity and depth are reduced relatively strong. Many players have the fear that the new subjects just yet without thinking can be replaced. The designer says, however, that this will change with the introduction of “Mastery” nothing. The depth of the system remains the same, only the confusion on the part of players is reduced.
We want to remove some of the confusion over a complicated stat system, which we think we can do without reducing the system’s depth. In fact, the other motivation for the stats overhaul was to solve some of the problems where a certain stat trumps all or a certain stat is always junk. If we nail that, then gear choices will actually be harder in Cataclysm, not easier.
Together with the set bonuses and procs that people want to further benefits, the range of potential equipment in Cataclysm be high enough.
