STO Credits – Money In Star Trek Online [updated]

January 17th, 2010 in Star Trek Online

[UPDATE in February 01, 2010] STO Credits can be bought here. We are preparing the dedicated page for buying STO Credits and Power Leveling.
As one of the World of Warcraft Gold store in the market, MmorpgRealm is concerned about the STO money in the new MMORPG – Star Trek Online. Even I am joined the game, and played couple hours. I didn’t understand the STO money still! I am confused about STO Credits, Merits and Latinum. Of course, the purpose of the joining into the STO open beta is not only for understanding what the official currencies in the game. However, it’s essential to play the Star Trek Online better. At least, I need STO credits to buy gun/ships from the shops in Star Trek Online.
There are three general money in STO. The first two could be saw in the character’s inventory:

Starfleet Merits
The money in STO be used for buying Bridge Officers, ships and and level up the crew you have. It seems that’s binds with characters. In other words, it can’t be exchanged with other players.

Energy Credits
Essentially currency! Common Money could be current in the Federation. It used to buy items and other content for your character, crew and ship.
Gold Pressed Latinum
I haven’t got any. And I didn’t understand how to get it yet. But I know it can used outside of the Federation.

Other Various Currencies in Star Trek Online
As I have mentioned at the beginning, I still not sure how many currencies there are have for Star Trek Online. I just listed the money I know.

I’ve kinda thought of the energy credits as a sort of barter system. Kinda like recycling. I put this much into it and I can take this much out of it. I would imagine in a war they would wantto keep track of resources. According to the wiki, Voyager had to use replicator credits to conserve energy. I would imagine if there is a war, they would be doing a similar thing.

In the end, I think we may be looking too much int other credits thing. Of the flaws that exist in the game the only fault I can find here is the fact that there seems to be 3 types of pvp badges and i don’t know what gets what.

You get different types of badges and medals at different ranks.
No, collecting of low level medals to buy high level equipment.

There is a 4th currency, medals. Its a pvp reward and you can buy higher quality equipment with it, like with the exploration badges.

I see it more as “credit” in the true sense of the word, as opposed to the “sci fi currency” that many people seem to be seeing it as. Basically, you do stuff for starfleet, and they give you equipment in return. The more you contribute, the more you’re able to ask for.
