What’s Grind in WOW?

Grinding has the special meaning in World of Warcraft or other video games. It refers to the act of doing something repetitively, for examples: killing monsters or working up a trade skill. In other words, it describe the process of engaging in repetitive and/or non-entertaining gameplay in order to gain access to other feature within the games. As most of cases, the grinding is a synonym word to treadmilling. However, the situation has been changed after the world of Warcraft has came into our view. In old-fashioned MMORPGs, grinding was the primary method for upgrading the characters’ levels. The main reason is that their quest systems were very underdeveloped, compared with the quest system of World of Warcraft. That’s why the WoW has been praised, since the game has less of a treadmill feeling than its predecessors. And now, the most of modern MMORPGs such as Aion Online learned the smart development of wow quest system.

There are serveral different types of grinding in World of Warcraft. You maybe hear of grinding levels usually. It’s one of the main type of grinding. In General
Different players grind for different purposes, intentionally or involuntarily.

  1. A given Goal: The major one, as motivating factor, is the player’s desire that they wanna the given ultimate goal in the game. For instance: the level capacity.
  2. Relaxing: Sometimes, players enjoy the familiar tasks, especially the performing of the tasks has positive results.
  3. No more new content: It’s lack of the game contents. You reached the maximum leveling of the game. You triumphed over the strongest enemies. What’s the next? There has no more fresh tasks you could do. You still enjoy the game. You have to grind. That’s why Blizzard always publishes expansion packs. And that’s one of the tricks that game publishers keep subscribers. Till of writing, we expect Cataclysm.

General Tips

  • Please make sure that you know what you are ready to kill before going out for grind levels.
  • You should stock up on restorative items and ammunition to reduce backtracking and overall downtime.
  • Being rested doubles the experience for killing a monster.
  • Grinding in a party may lower the amount of progress or loot any one player makes per fight, but also make those fights much quicker.
  • Two grinders do not need have conflicting interests. For instance, the players often allow skinners to tailgate them because they take ‘loot’ the player have no ability to use, while the skinner reciprocates by helping in fights(once the original player tags a mob) while not reducting the amount of xp the original player gets. This especially useful with large level disparities that would severely reduct the amount of experience a character may get if partied.

Grinding in other MMORPGs

  • Eve Online features a system that does not require continuous play to increase character skill. Characters are trained at a rate based upon their attributes and plugged in to their ship’s computer. Attributes can be enhanced via skills or cybernetic implants to decrease training time. In real time, training occurs continuously, whether the player is logged in or not. Some of the advanced skills can take as long as a month or more of to reach the next level. Players still have to grind for ISK (money), minerals, and NPC faction standing
  • Guild Wars uses a special low maximum level(20) to reduce grinding, as players can reach the level capacity within 24 hours of playing the game. As well as, equipment with maximum statistics is easy to obtain. Players can still improve themselves by searching for rare equipments (with the same statistics, but different looks), or gathering points for titles, which are mostly ‘for looks’. The whole game was designed around being a challenge even when you’re at the maximum level with the best equipment, but without huge gaps between hard core and casual players so both could enjoy the same challenges. The more you play, the better your gear will look, but your character won’t be stronger than others. This means that, unlike most MMORPGs, it is not about who has more hours to spend doing the same thing. Instead, it is about making use of what you’ve got to create better strategy.
  • The Lord of the Rings Online has the feature a “title system” in which players are rewarded special titles, and usually new abilities, for killing massive quantities of particular types of enemies. Grinding in the system makes both lucrative and enjoyable, since the player benefits from the added experience points and can receive a title who can show off to other players. For example, killing large amounts of Warg grants the player the “Warg-Slayer” title. Killing even more Warg results in more advanced titles, such as “Warg Foe” and so on. City of Heroes/City of Villains have similar system as well, named “badges system”.
  • Final Fantasy 12 has a “Chain” effect, which occurs when a player kills the same monster over and over, doing so increases the number on the Chain and rarity of the items the killed enemy drops, providing better loot. The maximum of the chain of the given monster is 999. The Chain break out once player kills different monster, or leaves the area.
  • MapleStory includes an entire party quest called the Dojo PQ, that can be done with several players or by yourself. The limitation of the players to joined is level 25 or above. In fact, it is a boss rush, in which the player or players revisit many bosses, one by one, all in a row. There are two rewards that promote grinding in this particular party quest. The first is you get a title for 24 hours when you beat a certain boss 100 times. The second is that after you beat every boss, you get Dojo points, which, when accumulated in large amounts, can be used to get equipment for your character which boost stats.
